Tribes of Kenya is an expressive platform created to share my journey as an Epidemiologist who left the United States to move to Zambia to assist with building their health system. I view this blog as a community experience in that it was created not only for me but for the many other women who are working in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines, serving as double minorities in that we are women and of color in fields that are unrepresentative of our cultural fabrics and capabilities. Tribes of Kenya was also established as a gateway for my community to have a virtual experience of learning about the continent of Africa. Born and raised in the rural Mississippi Delta, moving to Zambia was an atypical course of discovery. Thus, I am obligated to plant the seed of a virtual experience within my people that may someday translate into an actual experience of returning home to get that, which has been forgotten.
At Tribes of Kenya, we are concerned with our development rather than our comfort, thus we will use The Bridge to highlight parallelisms that exist between life in the United States and life in Zambia. We will navigate to the front line of happenings, The Corner, to learn Quick Facts about Zambia and to view Featured profiles of health professionals who are on the ground (street corners) fighting for health equity.
I hope to gain understanding and support through initiating this platform, stimulate conversation around parts of life that go unmentioned, and to empower us to stretch beyond the limits of our prejudices. So come along as I explore Daily Life in Zambia, Travel throughout the region, and Sup With Me as I indulge in Local Eats.
